Nil, Nil
People have questioned why soccer hasn't gained much of a foothold in this country. I always thought that since the year is divvied up by the various professional sports there really wasn't any room to squeeze it in. Look at what may - june usually brings - a fustercluck of hockey, basketball, baseball and all the outdoor sports of summer, all at the same time.
And it's not quite violent enough for americans. I mean, two teams on a big rectangular field means smashing into one another, right?Well I think I've been way off in my reasoning, and this essay by Frank Cannon & Richard Lessner at the Weekly Standard makes much better sense.
"DESPITE HEROIC EFFORTS of soccer moms, suburban liberals, and World Cup hype, soccer will never catch on as a big time sport in America. No game in which actually scoring goals is of such little importance could possibly occupy the attention of average Americans."
